Assumptions and limits

Estimates resting energy requirement (RER), not a daily feeding prescription. Actual energy needs vary with age, activity, body condition, health and life stage. Ask a veterinarian for an individualized feeding plan.

Formula

RER (kcal/day) = 70 × body weight (kg)^0.75. For pounds, convert to kilograms before applying the formula.

Example

For a 10 kg dog, RER = 70 × 10^0.75 ≈ 394 kcal/day.
