How many calories does a dog need?

A dog’s energy needs depend on body condition, life stage, activity and health. Toolnoza’s Dog Calorie Calculator estimates resting energy requirement (RER) from body weight. RER is a starting reference, not a personalized daily ration.

For a 10 kg dog, the calculator returns about 394 kcal/day: 70 × 10^0.75. A veterinarian can set an individual target and adjust it from weight and body-condition trends.

Dog RER formula

RER (kcal/day) = 70 × body weight in kg^0.75. For pounds, first convert: kg = lb ÷ 2.20462. The exponent applies to the weight in kilograms; it is not a simple calories-per-kilogram multiplication.

This equation estimates resting energy. Maintenance energy requirement (MER) applies a life-stage and activity factor and can vary substantially between dogs. The calculator reports RER only.

Worked examples in kg and lb

At 5 kg: 70 × 5^0.75 ≈ 234 kcal/day. At 10 kg: about 394 kcal/day. At 20 kg: about 662 kcal/day. These are rounded RER estimates from the same equation, not amounts to serve as food.

If your dog weighs 22 lb, convert to about 9.98 kg before calculating. Enter the measured current weight; ask your veterinary team whether ideal weight should be used for a weight-management plan.

RER versus daily food calories

RER describes energy at rest. Daily needs may be higher or lower depending on the individual dog. Food labels, treat calories, neuter status, growth, pregnancy, work and disease can change a feeding plan.

Use a veterinarian-approved daily calorie target in the Dog Food Calculator, then compare portions with the food label. Do not use this RER estimate by itself to start weight loss, feed a puppy or manage a medical condition.

Frequently asked questions

Is 394 kcal right for every 10 kg dog? No. It is the calculator’s RER estimate; actual daily needs are individual. Does the result include treats? No, the RER equation does not count food or treats.

Can I use pounds? Yes. The calculator converts pounds to kilograms before applying the equation. When should I ask a vet? Before changing portions for weight loss, growth, illness, pregnancy or a major change in appetite or weight.
