How much food should I feed my dog?

Start with a daily calorie target from your veterinarian or the food’s feeding guidance, then use the energy value printed on the package. Toolnoza divides the target by kcal per cup to estimate cups per day and splits that amount across meals.

The calculator does not decide how many calories your dog needs. Life stage, body condition, activity, health and treats matter. Get an individual calorie target before making a major portion change.

Dog food portion formula

Cups per day = daily calorie target ÷ kcal per cup. Cups per meal = cups per day ÷ meals per day. Example: 400 kcal/day ÷ 400 kcal/cup = 1 cup each day; across two meals, that is 0.5 cup per meal.

Use the food’s kcal-per-cup figure, not grams per cup or kcal per kilogram. If the label lists kcal per can or pouch, convert the package amount to a consistent unit before comparing.

Read the label and count treats

Food labels can list calorie content per cup, can, kilogram or other serving. Match the calculator’s unit exactly. Measuring cups vary; weighing a portion can improve consistency when the label provides grams per serving.

Include treats, chews, table food and training rewards in the daily plan. If those calories come from the same target, the main-meal portion may need adjustment by your veterinary team.

Use a safe daily target

A calorie calculator cannot assess body condition or nutrition adequacy. Growing puppies, pregnant or nursing dogs, working dogs and dogs with medical conditions may need a different plan. Monitor weight and discuss changes with a veterinarian.

For an estimate of resting energy only, see the Dog Calorie Calculator. Its RER result is not automatically the same as a daily calorie target for feeding.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator recommend a dog’s daily calories? No; enter a target set for your dog. What if food lists kcal per kilogram? Use a consistent conversion to kcal per cup or weigh food in grams and calculate with matching units.

Should I use a household cup? Follow the food label’s serving definition and measure consistently. If weight changes unexpectedly or your dog refuses food, contact a veterinarian.
