Haul Truck Fleet Sizing Calculator — Calculation guide

All tools: Mining & Quarrying

Estimate the number of haul trucks needed to meet an hourly tonnage target using payload, cycle time and efficiency.

Inputs

Size a preliminary truck fleet for a chosen production target while exposing availability and utilization separately.

Enter target tonnes per hour, effective truck payload, observed average full cycle time, fleet availability and utilization.

Method and assumptions

Effective t/h per truck = payload × (60 / cycle minutes) × availability × utilization. Required trucks = ceiling(target / effective t/h).

Worked example

For 800 t/h, 60 t payload, 30 min cycle, 85% availability and 80% utilization, one truck supplies 81.6 t/h; 10 trucks are estimated.

Limitations

Cycle time should include loading, loaded travel, dumping, empty return and recurring delays without counting the same losses twice. Verify shovel matching, queueing and road constraints.

Why round fleet size up?

Truck counts are whole numbers. Rounding up avoids falling below the target in the mathematical estimate.
