Inputs

Evaluate a machine availability KPI with explicit time boundaries. Use one consistent reporting period for scheduled time and downtime.

Enter scheduled time, total downtime, actual running hours, corrective repair hours and failure count for the same period.

Method and assumptions

Availability (%) = (scheduled − downtime)/scheduled × 100. MTBF = operating hours/failures. MTTR = downtime/failures, only when all downtime represents repair events.

Worked example

720 scheduled hours and 72 downtime hours give 648 available hours and 90% availability. With 600 actual running hours, 48 corrective repair hours and 6 failures, MTBF = 100 h and MTTR = 8 h.

Limitations

For valid MTTR, isolate corrective repair downtime; planned stops, waits and administrative delays require separate treatment. No failures means MTBF and MTTR are not determined.

Is mechanical availability the same as utilization?

No. Availability measures readiness over scheduled time; utilization measures how much available time is used productively.
