STEP BY STEP

How to use welding travel speed calculator

  1. Check the input units and assumptions.
  2. Review the result and example.

IN PRACTICE

Example

L = 300 mm; t = 60 s → v = 300 mm/min = 11.81 in/min; Ltarget = 1000 mm → 3.33 min.

GOOD TO KNOW

Is travel speed equal to wire-feed speed?

No. Travel speed is forward movement along the joint. Wire-feed speed is the length of consumable fed into the arc per time.

Formula and worked example

v (mm/min) = 60L (mm)/t (s); v (in/min) = v (mm/min)/25.4; ttarget (min) = Ltarget (mm)/v.

L = 300 mm; t = 60 s → v = 300 mm/min = 11.81 in/min; Ltarget = 1000 mm → 3.33 min.

How to interpret the result

Use this measured speed in heat-input calculations with voltage and current recorded for the same run. A slow section can have different local heat input from the overall average.

The estimated target time is arc-on time. To plan a shift, add preparation and interruptions using observed shop productivity rather than treating arc-on time as total labor time.

Frequently asked questions

Is travel speed equal to wire-feed speed?

No. Travel speed is forward movement along the joint. Wire-feed speed is the length of consumable fed into the arc per time.

What assumptions limit this calculation?

Average travel speed, not wire-feed speed. Excludes setup, repositioning, cooling and breaks. Oscillation path length is not the same as forward weld length.
