IN PRACTICE
Example
Cw = 60%; ρs = 2700 kg/m³; ρl = 1000 kg/m³ → ρm = 1607.14 kg/m³; Cv = 35.71%.
GOOD TO KNOW
Can I enter ore bulk density?
Use true solids density, excluding voids between particles. Loose bulk density produces an incorrect phase-volume balance.
Formula and worked example
w = Cw/100; ρm = 1/[w/ρs + (1 − w)/ρl]; Cv (%) = 100(w/ρs)/[w/ρs + (1 − w)/ρl].
Cw = 60%; ρs = 2700 kg/m³; ρl = 1000 kg/m³ → ρm = 1607.14 kg/m³; Cv = 35.71%.
How to interpret the result
Mass percent and volume percent differ when the solid is denser than liquid. A 60% mass concentration in this example is only about 36% by volume. Label the basis on sampling sheets.
Density alone does not predict viscosity or pumpability. Particle-size distribution, mineral shape and chemistry can change rheology at the same solids concentration.
Frequently asked questions
Can I enter ore bulk density?
Use true solids density, excluding voids between particles. Loose bulk density produces an incorrect phase-volume balance.
What assumptions limit this calculation?
Two-phase mixture without entrained air or volume contraction. Particle density is not loose bulk density. Dissolved solids should already be reflected in liquid density.
