V = L × W × (depth / 12); yd³ = ft³ / 27; bags = ceil(V × (1 + waste / 100) / bag volume).

STEP BY STEP

How to use mulch calculator

  1. Check the input units and assumptions.
  2. Review the result and example.

IN PRACTICE

Example

A 10 ft × 20 ft bed covered 3 in deep has 10 × 20 × 0.25 = 50 ft³ of base volume. That is 50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 yd³. With 10% extra, order about 2.04 yd³. If bags contain 2 ft³, the adjusted volume is 55 ft³, so the estimate is 28 bags.

GOOD TO KNOW

Which assumptions should I check?

Do not multiply inches directly by feet. Do not confuse square feet with cubic feet. Landscape beds with curves, slopes or deep pockets can need more material than a flat rectangular model. Mulch also settles after placement, and bag volumes differ by product. Treat the result as an ordering estimate rather than an installation guarantee.
