Pavement area and compacted depth
Length × widthDepth

lb = L × W × (depth / 12) × density × (1 + waste / 100); US tons = lb / 2000; tonnes = lb × 0.00045359237.

STEP BY STEP

How to use asphalt calculator

  1. Check the input units and assumptions.
  2. Review the result and example.

IN PRACTICE

Example

The Asphalt Institute gives a 10 ft × 25 ft area at 4 in thick: volume = 83.3 ft³. Using 148 lb/ft³ gives about 12,328 lb, or about 6.1 short tons. This is a calculation example; your mix density and compaction target may differ.

GOOD TO KNOW

Which assumptions should I check?

Do not use loose truck volume as though it were compacted pavement volume. Thickness must be the compacted design thickness. Asphalt density varies with mix and compaction. Very large or structural pavement projects need engineering design, lift planning and supplier confirmation, not just a tonnage calculator.
