Formula and assumptions

Battery energy (kWh) = capacity × (target % − start %)/100; time (h) = battery energy ÷ min(charger kW × efficiency, vehicle limit kW).

Simplified constant-power estimate. Actual time varies with the vehicle, charger, temperature and charging taper, especially on DC fast charging.

A 60 kWh battery from 20% to 80% needs 36 kWh; at 7.4 kW and 90% efficiency, estimated time is about 5.4 hours if the vehicle accepts that power.

How to use ev charging time calculator

  1. Check the input units and assumptions.
  2. Review the result and example.

IN PRACTICE

Example

A 60 kWh battery charged from 20% to 80% needs 36 kWh. At 7.4 kW, a 90% efficiency estimate gives about 5.4 hours if the vehicle accepts that power.

GOOD TO KNOW

Does the estimate account for charging speed changes?

Estimated battery energy = capacity × (target charge − starting charge). Effective battery-side power = the lower of charger power × efficiency and the vehicle limit. Time = battery energy ÷ effective power. Charging taper and vehicle-specific curves are not modeled.
