How to calculate a test score

For equally weighted questions with no penalty, percentage = (correct answers ÷ total questions) × 100. If you enter wrong or unanswered answers, correct = total − wrong. A score out of 20 is percentage ÷ 5.

Worked example

On a 40-question test with 5 wrong or blank answers, you have 35 correct. 35 ÷ 40 × 100 = 87.5%. On a 20-point scale, 87.5 ÷ 5 = 17.5/20. The Toolnoza calculator performs these conversions from the total and wrong-answer counts.

When this formula does not apply

The calculation assumes every question has equal value and there is no penalty for incorrect answers. If questions have different point values, add the points earned and divide by the total available points. If wrong answers lose points, subtract the stated penalty before converting to a percentage.

Letter grades and rounding

A percentage does not map to one universal letter grade. Use the grading scale published by your school or instructor. Keep full precision until the final step, then follow the required rounding rule; rounding each question separately can change a borderline result.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a score out of 20? Divide the percentage by 5; for example, 80% = 16/20. Are blank answers wrong? This calculator counts them with wrong answers; change the count if your test treats blanks differently. Does it handle weighted questions? No. Use points earned divided by points possible for weighted tests.
