Overview
A print-on-demand sale can look profitable until shipping, marketplace fees and advertising are included. A useful POD profit calculation separates customer revenue from every variable cost tied to the order, then reports both profit in currency and profit margin as a percentage of revenue.
Formula and calculation
Revenue = item price + shipping charged to customer. Costs = base product cost + fulfillment shipping + percentage platform fees + fixed fees + advertising + other order costs. Profit = revenue − costs. Profit margin = profit ÷ revenue × 100. ROI can be shown as profit ÷ costs × 100. For a break-even selling price, solve for the price that makes profit equal zero while keeping percentage fees in the equation.
Worked example
If a shirt sells for $25 and the customer pays $5 shipping, revenue is $30. Suppose base cost is $10, fulfillment shipping is $4, marketplace fee is 6.5%, fixed fee is $0.30 and advertising allocation is $2. Percentage fee = $1.95. Total costs = $18.25 and estimated profit = $11.75, or 39.2% of revenue.
How to use the calculator
Use the actual base cost for the product variant and destination. Enter what the customer pays for shipping separately from what the print provider charges you. Add marketplace and payment fees that apply to your channel. For paid ads, use a realistic per-order cost or acquisition cost rather than ignoring it.
Common mistakes and practical limits
Returns, refunds, chargebacks, taxes, currency conversion, subscription plans and discount campaigns may change real profit. Some marketplaces calculate fees on shipping and taxes, so use the channel-specific fee tool when accuracy matters. This calculator is a planning model, not bookkeeping or tax advice.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good POD profit margin?
There is no universal target. Compare margin with your advertising cost, refund rate and required cash flow.
Should shipping charged to the buyer count as revenue?
Yes for the order model, then subtract the fulfillment shipping cost and any fees assessed on shipping.
Technical reference
Use actual provider base cost, shipping, marketplace fees and ad cost. Fee structures differ by provider and sales channel.
