Start with the system and the home

Record the conditioned floor area, existing system type, fuel or power source, number of zones and the condition of ducts and controls. Area is useful for budgeting, but it is not a substitute for a room-by-room heating and cooling load calculation. Equipment should be selected for the actual building and climate.

Compare equivalent written bids

Check model and capacity, efficiency rating, thermostat, duct modifications, electrical work, condensate drainage, start-up and commissioning. Ask what is excluded and how repairs or code-required changes are handled. A lower equipment price may omit installation work or commissioning.

Build a low-to-high estimate

  1. Enter the conditioned area and low/high installed rates from local contractor quotes.
  2. Add separate allowances for ductwork, electrical changes, permits or other excluded items.
  3. Apply a contingency and ask bidders to explain any large difference in scope or assumptions.

Use the calculator as a planning aid

The result is a range from your own inputs, not a recommended system size or a live local price. Have a qualified HVAC professional verify load, equipment selection, ventilation, electrical capacity and local requirements before work begins.
