How much food should I feed my cat?
Use a daily calorie target set for your cat, then read the energy density on the food label. Toolnoza divides daily calories by kcal per cup and divides the daily portion by the number of meals.
The calculator converts a target into a portion; it does not determine the target. A cat’s age, body condition, activity and health affect needs. Ask a veterinarian before changing portions for weight management or illness.
Cat food portion formula
Cups per day = daily calorie target ÷ kcal per cup. Cups per meal = cups per day ÷ meals per day. For example, 200 kcal/day ÷ 200 kcal/cup = 1 cup per day; split into two meals, that is 0.5 cup each.
Use the exact kcal-per-cup value for the food. Do not substitute kcal per kilogram, per can or per pouch without converting to a matching unit.
Check calorie density and meal size
Different dry and wet foods can provide different calories in the same volume. Check the package’s kcal statement and serving size. A measuring cup may not match the actual weight of food; use grams if your label provides a gram weight and you have a scale.
Count treats and supplementary foods within the daily target. If you change brands or formulas, recheck the calorie density because the same cup volume may deliver a different amount of energy.
Use a veterinary-approved target
This tool cannot assess whether a cat is underweight, overweight or receiving a nutritionally complete diet. Kittens, pregnant cats and cats with health conditions may need specific feeding plans.
For a resting-energy estimate, see the Cat Calorie Calculator. Its RER is not automatically a daily calorie goal. Cornell notes that wet food can add substantial water, but it still contributes calories to the daily total.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tool tell me how many calories my cat needs? No. It divides a target you enter by the food’s calories per cup. Are wet-food calories included? Yes, enter the calorie density and serving unit shown for that food.
Should I reduce portions if my cat is gaining weight? Discuss a safe plan with a veterinarian. Do not use this portion calculator alone to put a cat on a weight-loss diet.
