Overview
A paver count starts with two areas: the surface you want to cover and the face area of one paver. Dividing project area by paver area gives a theoretical count, then a waste allowance covers cuts, breakage and pattern losses.
Formula and calculation
Paver area = paver length × paver width. Convert both dimensions to the same unit as the project area. Required count = project area ÷ paver area. Adjusted count = required count × (1 + waste %), rounded up. If pavers are sold in packs, packs = adjusted count ÷ pavers per pack, rounded up.
Worked example
A 200 ft² patio using 8 × 4 in pavers has a paver face area of 32 in² = 0.2222 ft². The theoretical count is 200 ÷ 0.2222 ≈ 900. With 10% waste, the order estimate is 990 pavers.
How to use the calculator
Measure the finished paved area, not the excavation footprint. Enter the nominal face size of one paver and a waste rate that matches the pattern. Straight running bonds usually need fewer cuts than diagonal, curved or mixed-size layouts.
Common mistakes and practical limits
Joint width, manufacturer coverage, spacer lugs and multi-size patterns can change effective coverage. Do not use outside dimensions when a manufacturer publishes pack coverage. Base material, bedding sand and edge restraint are separate quantities.
Frequently asked questions
Why add waste to a paver estimate?
Waste covers cuts, breakage, color selection and future repairs.
Should I calculate from pack coverage instead?
Yes when the manufacturer publishes reliable square-foot or square-meter coverage per pack.
Technical reference
Actual layouts, cuts, edge restraints and manufacturer patterns can change the required count; verify pack coverage with the supplier.
