Overview
Drywall estimating is primarily an area calculation. Add the wall and ceiling areas you plan to board, subtract large openings if appropriate, then divide by the face area of one sheet. A waste allowance accounts for cuts and offcuts that cannot always be reused.
Formula and calculation
Net board area = wall area + ceiling area − openings. Adjusted area = net area × (1 + waste %). Sheet area = sheet width × sheet length. Sheets = adjusted area ÷ sheet area, rounded up. A 4 × 8 ft sheet covers 32 ft² before cuts.
Worked example
Suppose walls and ceiling total 472 ft² and doors/windows account for 40 ft². Net area = 432 ft². With 10% waste, adjusted area = 475.2 ft². Using 4 × 8 ft sheets: 475.2 ÷ 32 = 14.85, so estimate 15 sheets.
How to use the calculator
Measure each wall as width × height and add the ceiling if it will be boarded. Subtract only openings you do not plan to cover and that are large enough to matter. Select the actual sheet size you will buy.
Common mistakes and practical limits
Real layouts depend on stud spacing, board orientation, staggered joints, fire or moisture-rated assemblies and local code. Small openings may not save a full board because surrounding pieces still have to be cut. The calculator estimates panels only; compounds, tape, screws and corner bead are separate.
Frequently asked questions
Should I subtract doors and windows?
Subtract significant openings, but remember small openings may not reduce whole-sheet purchases.
Is 10% waste always enough?
No. Complex rooms, many openings or short pieces can require a different allowance.
