Paint Calculator Guide: Estimate Paint for Room Walls and Coats

All tools: Construction & Civil Engineering

Estimate wall paint from room dimensions, doors, windows, number of coats and the coverage printed on the can. Avoid treating a general coverage rate as a guarantee.

Measure wall area

For a rectangular room, wall area before openings = 2 × (room length + room width) × wall height. Subtract measured doors and windows if the paint calculator allows. Keep all measurements in one unit: a 4 m by 3 m room with 2.5 m walls has 2 × (4 + 3) × 2.5 = 35 m² of wall area before openings.

Account for coats and product coverage

Paintable area = net wall area × number of coats. Estimated litres = paintable area ÷ the coverage rate on the product label. If the can states a range, calculate with the coverage that best fits your surface and application method; textured or absorbent walls can use more. Primer may require a separate product and coat.

For example, 35 m² with two coats and a label coverage of 10 m²/L gives 70 ÷ 10 = 7 L before adjustment for openings or surface conditions. The example coverage is an input, not a universal paint standard.

Ceilings, trim and multiple colours

Calculate ceilings separately as length × width. Door and window trim is not the same area as the wall face; use the product’s stated coverage and a separate estimate where needed. If colours change between walls, calculate each colour area separately to avoid counting the same wall twice.

Why actual usage varies

Coverage depends on the paint, substrate, colour change, preparation, roller or spray method, and whether the surface is new or previously painted. The calculator cannot inspect these conditions. Follow the label and manufacturer instructions, and keep a note of product, colour and batch for touch-ups.

Use the paint calculator

  1. Measure each wall and enter room length, width and height.
  2. Subtract openings if the tool supports them, then set coat count and labelled coverage.
  3. Compare the estimate with package sizes and check whether primer or a different colour needs its own calculation.

The result is a planning estimate. It does not replace the coating manufacturer’s technical data or a site test.
