Convert Square Metres, Hectares and Acres

All tools: Unit Converters

Convert a known area without confusing square units with length, using land-area examples and sensible rounding.

Area comes before conversion

The converter changes the unit of a known area; it does not survey a plot. For a rectangle, first multiply length by width in compatible units. Irregular land requires a suitable measurement method before unit conversion.

Square metres and hectares

One hectare is 10,000 m². Divide square metres by 10,000 to obtain hectares; multiply hectares by 10,000 for square metres. A 25,000 m² plot therefore measures 2.5 hectares.

Acres

Using the international foot, one acre equals 4046.8564224 m². Divide square metres by this factor for acres. A 10,000 m² hectare is approximately 2.47105 acres. Retain extra digits until the final reporting step.

Why length factors are not enough

A square metre is 10,000 square centimetres, not 100. Both dimensions change by a factor of 100, so the area factor is 100 × 100. Confusing metres and square metres produces large errors.

Check the source document

Confirm whether a document uses modern international units or a historical surveying definition. A converted figure preserves the uncertainty of the original measurement. It does not establish a legal boundary or replace the area recorded in an authoritative survey.
