Identify the input unit
Write down both the number and the unit before converting. A reading of 60 mph is not the same speed as 60 km/h. Select the source and destination units in the converter, then enter the value.
Kilometres per hour and mph
One international mile is 1.609344 kilometres. Multiply mph by 1.609344 to obtain km/h; divide km/h by the same factor for mph. Thus 60 mph = 96.56064 km/h, usually reported as 96.56 km/h.
Metres per second
Divide km/h by 3.6 for m/s, or multiply m/s by 3.6 for km/h. A speed of 72 km/h equals 20 m/s. This factor follows from 1000 metres per kilometre and 3600 seconds per hour.
Speed is not pace
Speed is distance per time. Pace is time per distance, such as minutes per kilometre. At 12 km/h, pace is 60 ÷ 12 = 5 min/km. Use the running-pace calculator when the required answer is a pace.
Round at the end
Retain full precision during intermediate calculations and round the final result to match the measurement. A unit conversion cannot improve the accuracy of a speedometer or turn a point speed into an average for an entire trip.
