When conversion helps
Choose PNG when another application requires that format or when you want a lossless copy of the decoded pixels for further work. Converting a photograph just to make it smaller is usually a different task; compare compression options instead.
Convert the file
Select the JPG, run the conversion and download the PNG. Check that the image opens and that the expected pixel dimensions remain. Changing a filename extension alone does not convert the file contents.
Quality cannot be recovered
JPEG may already contain compression artifacts. Saving its decoded image as PNG preserves those visible pixels; it does not recreate missing detail. Compare the image at normal viewing size rather than expecting new sharpness.
Transparency is not automatic
PNG supports transparent pixels, but a JPG has no alpha transparency. Conversion does not remove a white background or isolate a subject. Background removal requires a separate editing operation.
Compare size and purpose
The PNG may be larger than the JPG, especially for photographs. Keep the original, inspect the output and choose the format required by the destination. For a strict upload limit, measure the actual exported size instead of assuming one format will always be smaller.
