Weighted grade formula
For category scores s and weights w, weighted average = Σ(s × w) ÷ Σw. If weights are percentages that total 100, the result is already on the same percentage scale. If weights total another value, divide by the weights actually included.
For example, exams score 80% at 60% weight and homework scores 90% at 40% weight: 80 × 0.60 + 90 × 0.40 = 84%.
Check whether weights total 100%
If the published course weights sum to 100%, enter the categories as listed. If you are calculating only completed work, use only the included categories and divide by their combined weight to get the average on completed work. That is not necessarily the final course grade because remaining assignments can change it.
Points-based and category-based grading
Some courses weight categories, then average scores inside each category. Others add earned points and divide by available points. These methods differ when assignments have different point totals. Follow the syllabus: apply a category weight to each category average, or use total earned points ÷ total possible points when the course specifies a points system.
Missing work, extra credit and rounding
Do not enter a missing assignment as zero unless the gradebook or course rule currently treats it as zero. Extra credit may be outside the stated weight total. Keep full precision through the calculation and apply the instructor’s rounding rule at the end; letter-grade thresholds vary by course.
Use the weighted grade calculator
- Enter each category score and its weight in the format requested.
- Check that the included categories and denominator reflect the syllabus and current gradebook.
- Compare the result with the instructor’s grade policy before treating it as an official course grade.
The calculator performs weighted arithmetic. It does not know your course rules, dropped scores or future assignments.
